Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) suffered a significant defeat against the government in Saturday’s local council elections, Women’s Development Committee elections, and the associated referendums.
Nasheed made these remarks in a post on X. He stated that all cities, the majority of islands, and the general referendum have overwhelmingly rejected the government. The former president also expressed his gratitude to everyone who cast their vote.
Provisional results from today’s referendum indicate that the public has delivered a resounding rejection of the government. In addition to losing the mayoral seats in every city, the administration faced a significant defeat as the MDP secured a substantial majority against the government across numerous council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) constituencies.
