Voters in the cities have reaffirmed their confidence in the incumbent mayors from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), endorsing their experience and track record in the Local Council Elections.
According to preliminary results, the mayoral races across the cities have been decided, with Ali Nizar securing the mayoralty of Addu City and Adam Azim winning in Male' City. Additionally, Saud Ali has been elected as the Mayor of Thinadhoo City, Mohamed Athif as the Mayor of Kulhudhuffushi City, and Ismail Rafeeq as the Mayor of Fuvahmulah City.
The MDP secured a significant majority in the cities despite the government's intensive campaigning to win these seats, which included attempts to influence the outcome of the local council and Women's Development Committee elections through employment-related pressures and other means.
All five individuals who secured mayoral seats on the MDP ticket are current incumbents. This indicates that the residents of these cities have recognized and accepted the positive track record established by the MDP mayors during their tenure.
Provisional results indicate that the MDP has secured the majority of council seats. Furthermore, in the referendum held to determine public opinion on aligning presidential and parliamentary elections, voters overwhelmingly rejected the proposal to hold the two elections simultaneously.
