Despite president’s earlier pledge that no new projects would be launched in the lead-up to the election, contracts for development projects across eight islands are awarded to various companies in direct contradiction to his statement
The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure has officially contracted development projects across eight islands to MTCC, RDC, and HDC, encompassing the construction of housing units, road development, harbor upgrades, and coastal protection. While these agreements mandate completion within specific timeframes ahead of the upcoming local council elections, the government has notably withheld the total financial valuation of these projects.

Despite President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s earlier pledge that no new projects would be initiated to coincide with the elections, contracts for projects in eight islands have been awarded to various companies, directly contradicting the President's statement.
The agreements for these projects were signed during a special ceremony held at the Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure.
Under this initiative, a project to develop 50 housing units in HDh. Vaikaradhoo has been awarded to HDC, with a completion timeline of 480 days.
The project involves the construction of 50 three-bedroom housing units on the island.
Furthermore, the Road Development Corporation (RDC) has been contracted to upgrade the roads of AA. Himandhoo to modern standards, alongside the second phase of the road development project in R. Hulhudhuffaaru. Both projects are scheduled for completion within 730 days.
During a ceremony held on Wednesday, agreements for five infrastructure development projects across five islands were officially signed and awarded to MTCC.
Under these agreements, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted to complete the development of the L. Mundoo harbor within 400 days, while the coastal protection project in GDh. Hoandeddhoo is scheduled for completion within 240 days. Furthermore, MTCC has been tasked with the coastal protection project in N. Landhoo, which includes the development of a swimming area and a boat beaching zone, to be completed within 360 days.
Furthermore, an agreement has been signed with MTCC to complete the development of the harbor, jetty, and swimming area in R. Angolhitheemu within 360 days. Additionally, the company has been contracted to complete the coastal protection project in GA. Nilandhoo within a 300-day period.
Although the signing of these agreements has been made public, the Ministry has not disclosed the total cost of any of these projects.
With the local council elections scheduled for April 4, the government has been awarding numerous development projects to various companies. However, during his most recent press conference, President Muizzu stated that no new projects would be initiated specifically for the election. He emphasized that his administration does not operate based on electoral timelines.
