U.S. envoy Sergio Gor has concluded his visit to the Maldives aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and departed the country without meeting with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Sergio serves as the United States' Special Representative for South and Central Asia. As part of his official tour of the region, he was scheduled to visit Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Following his visit to Sri Lanka, Sergio arrived in the Maldives and has now departed after concluding his official mission.
During a press conference held at the President's Office on Monday, President Muizzu announced that a meeting with Sergio has been scheduled. The President noted that Sergio had requested an appointment for the meeting and confirmed that he is also expected to meet with several cabinet ministers.
Furthermore, President Muizzu stated that despite his meeting with Sergio, there would be no discussions regarding the conflict in Iran. In this regard, President Muizzu emphasized that no part of Maldivian territory would be permitted for use in the Iranian conflict or any other warfare.
However, Sergio departed the Maldives without meeting President Muizzu. A reliable source informed RaajjeMV that it was Sergio who cancelled the scheduled meeting with the President. Prior to the cancellation, Sergio had held meetings with Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel and Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon.
While President Muizzu’s meeting with Sergio was canceled prior to his departure, the President delivered a sharp critique of Israel during a press conference on Monday. President Muizzu stated that if Iran were to launch an attack, he would call for direct strikes against Israel. Expressing this as his personal stance, he called for sustained, around-the-clock attacks against Israel.
While the United States and Israel maintain a close partnership, the two nations are currently engaged in a joint military effort against Iran.
