Despite the current government's pledge to the people of Kulhudhuffushi City to commence physical work on the synthetic track project—a top priority for the city's sporting community and youth—by December 2025, there has yet to be any tangible progress toward fulfilling this promise.
During his official visit to Kulhudhuffushi City last August, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed high hopes for this project. Addressing the residents during the trip, the President stated that work on the synthetic track in Kulhudhuffushi is scheduled to commence by December 2025 at the latest.
"The synthetic track project is a vital initiative within the sports sector that has faced significant delays. While various attempts were previously made to advance this project through different funding sources, we have now decided that the government will no longer allow this matter to remain prolonged," the President stated.
Noting that the project has been delayed due to a reliance on external funding, the President stated that the Ministry of Finance is currently working to secure the necessary arrangements. He further expressed his hope that physical work on the project would commence before December 2025.
However, today is March 6, 2026. Despite the deadline set by the President having passed, there is still no visible progress on the physical construction of the synthetic track.
Despite a survey team visiting the city last January in an apparent attempt to mislead the public ahead of April's local council elections, the project has seen no further progress since then.
As the central government's promises to the public continue to pile up unfulfilled, the youth of Kulhudhuffushi—who hold high hopes for modern sporting facilities such as a synthetic track—are being pushed into a state of deep disillusionment.
