MDP Pickup Rally: "Merging elections undermines constitutional authority"
MDP has accused the government of attempting to diminish the constitutional power of the people by proposing to hold presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently. Claiming that this move is a calculated effort by President Dr. Muizzu to extend his grip on power, the opposition party has called for public defiance against the proposal. Consequently, the MDP is urging citizens to safeguard their democratic authority by voting against the measure in the upcoming referendum on synchronizing elections.

Former Vice President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Shifaz, has stated that merging elections would undermine constitutional authority.
He made these remarks while addressing the MDP's pickup truck rally.
Shifaz stated that from the inception of the movement to bring democracy to the Maldives until today, the PNC’s ideology has contributed nothing to the advancement of democratic values. He asserted that upholding the Constitution and empowering the public are concepts foreign to the PNC. He further noted that the proposal to hold presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously is yet another step in a series of efforts aimed at diminishing the power of the people.
We must reject the proposal to hold the two elections simultaneously because we are concerned that an individual who was neither involved in nor connected to the significant political transformations in the Maldives is suddenly attempting to overhaul the country's system.Mohamed Shifaz, Former Vice President of MDP.
Shifaz further stated that reducing the frequency of elections directly diminishes the opportunities for citizens to have their voices heard. He warned that allowing this to happen would be something the public would later regret. Furthermore, Shifaz asserted that whenever there is an attempt to undermine the empowerment of the people, the public will rise in defense of their rights. In addition to Shifaz, other speakers at the gathering also claimed that there are hidden agendas behind the proposed referendum to align the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Furthermore, speakers at the rally alleged that the move to synchronize elections is a maneuver by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to extend his presidential term. Those who addressed the gathering also emphasized that the public must rise up against these actions and vocally express their opposition.
