Withholding information from public regarding referendum poses a significant hidden danger, warns Solih
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has warned of significant risks surrounding the government's lack of transparency regarding proposed constitutional amendments to hold presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently. Asserting that these changes would undermine the public's ability to hold the government accountable, Solih urged citizens to vote "no" in the upcoming referendum. Additionally, he affirmed that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) remains committed to public service as it prepares for the forthcoming local council elections.

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that withholding information from the public regarding the referendum poses a significant hidden danger.
During a campaign visit to houses in the Henveiru West constituency for the upcoming Local Council, Women's Development Committee, and referendum elections, President Solih told RaajjeTV that the government is attempting to hold a referendum by secretly proposing a significant constitutional amendment amidst the election cycle. He further stated that the manner in which this was planned, combined with the failure to provide adequate information to the public, suggests a dangerous hidden agenda behind these actions.
Therefore, there is no room for doubt here. First and foremost, it is crucial that we reject this proposal. Otherwise, the opportunity for citizens to hold the government accountable will be entirely lost. If the parliamentary and presidential elections are held simultaneously, the connection between the people and the government will be completely severed for the following five years. There will be no mechanism for scrutiny. The Parliament will be fully aligned with the government, making it impossible to ensure accountability through the legislature. Consequently, the public will be left with no means to hold the government answerable.Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
President Solih stated that the referendum involves highly dangerous elements and noted that the underlying motives behind it remain unclear. He added that these issues would be further addressed as the campaign progresses.
This referendum involves extremely dangerous elements. Furthermore, we may not yet know what hidden agendas lie behind it. As this campaign progresses, those details will surely come to light. My plea to you is to remain vigilant and concerned; I believe this is a matter of grave concern. I urge everyone to come forward. The MDP has already taken the lead. If others wish to act independently, my appeal is for you to join this effort to save the nation.Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
