Combining two elections currently in the hands of the people is a result of the government's tyranny and oppression: Shahid
Shahid has accused the current administration of disregarding democratic principles, claiming that the move to consolidate two elections is a calculated attempt to undermine public empowerment and establish an authoritarian regime. Highlighting that the government is prioritizing the expansion of its own power over listening to the people, Shahid characterized the opposition's efforts against the administration as a vital national duty.

The President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shahid, has stated that the government’s decision to consolidate two elections is a manifestation of its cruelty and authoritarianism.
Shahid made these remarks while speaking at a rally held by the MDP at its campaign site on Monday.
Shahid stated that the effort to reject the current administration is both a national and religious duty, emphasizing that the MDP is working to safeguard the rights of the people. Highlighting that democracy is rooted in the empowerment of citizens, he noted that this government does not believe in empowering the public. Shahid further remarked that despite their vocal rhetoric on democracy, the administration has failed to take any action to promote democratic values.
"The government is striving for absolute power. Despite their loud rhetoric regarding democracy, they are making no effort to strengthen it. Instead, they are advocating for authoritarianism. Democracy is about listening to the voice of the people; it is the power of the people. It is about those elected by the citizens governing on their behalf," Shahid said.
Shahid stated that those attempting to dismantle the system cannot be considered advocates for democracy. He further asserted that the current administration and its leadership neither respect nor adhere to democratic principles. Describing elections as a vital opportunity to address the needs of the people, Shahid noted that any attempt to restrict this process is not in the best interest of the public.
"Today's administration is a cruel and tyrannical regime paving the way for autocracy. They are attempting to consolidate two elections under the guise of cost-cutting, but in reality, they are simply reducing the opportunities for the people's voices to be heard," Shahid said.
Shahid alleged that there are hidden motives behind the government's move to consolidate the elections. He further emphasized that the public must remain highly vigilant regarding these developments.
