Former Environment Minister Aminath Shauna has criticized the Parliament, stating that its performance has fallen below zero due to political influence.
Shauna made these remarks while speaking at an MDP rally held on Monday night.
She stated that the Parliament is failing to hold the government accountable. Shauna further asserted that it is unacceptable to stand by while the Constitution is being undermined. Consequently, she urged the public to overwhelmingly reject the upcoming referendum on consolidating the local council, Women's Development Committee (WDC), presidential, and parliamentary elections. Shauna also criticized the current state of the legislature, noting that the people's representatives have effectively been silenced.
Shauna stated that the rights and powers currently enjoyed by the people were secured through the tireless efforts of the MDP. She urged the public not to allow these powers to be undermined today. Furthermore, Shauna called on the citizens to remain steadfast and not succumb to attempts to win the election by suppressing and intimidating the public.
