The MDP has launched a high-spirited protest with banners to voice a firm "no" against the merging of elections, declared Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, the party's interim Chairperson and Member of Parliament for the Hanimaadhoo constituency. He emphasized that the MDP will not stand by while the empowerment of the people is being undermined.
As part of its campaign urging the public to vote "no" in the upcoming referendum on synchronizing presidential and parliamentary elections, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) carried out activities to display banners across various areas of Male' on Saturday night.
Speaking to RaajjeMV during the event, Ghafoor stated that the MDP will undertake extensive efforts to prevent the synchronization of the two elections. He noted that the party has decided to conduct a nationwide campaign to inform the public about the true motives behind merging the elections. Ghafoor further announced that a large-scale protest against the move has been scheduled for March 21st.
"Consolidating elections is unacceptable. The people must be consulted three times within a five-year period. Replacing that with a single instance of seeking the public's mandate is intolerable. The MDP will stand up every time the people are being disenfranchised," he said.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s decree to hold a referendum on whether to conduct presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously.
President Muizzu issued the decree regarding the referendum to synchronize the two elections on Monday, February 16.
