Voting only once every five years is one of the most detrimental actions, both for the individual and the community: Ziyad
MP Ziyad stated that there are numerous factors to consider when voting in the upcoming referendum on whether to synchronize the local council, presidential, and parliamentary elections. Ziyad noted that the primary reason many countries hold midterm elections is to empower the citizens. Therefore, Ziyad argued that the public should not vote in favor of consolidating the elections.

Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad has stated that voting only once every five years is one of the most detrimental practices, both for individuals and for the development of their respective islands.
He made these remarks while addressing an MDP "pickup" rally. He stated that reducing the frequency of elections would diminish the level of accountability required regarding public services and development projects.
Ziyad further characterized the sudden constitutional amendments to reduce the frequency of elections as being contrary to the best interests and welfare of the public.
"As you are aware, this is how things are even in Hulhumalé. This is how promotions are granted. The reality is that this is how the Maldives operates. Officials only visit the islands because there is an election. Therefore, reducing the frequency of elections will ultimately be to the detriment of the public," Ziyad said.
Ziyad stated that synchronizing elections would pave the way for governments to avoid engaging with the public. He further characterized the move as an attempt to undermine the empowerment of the people.
