MDP National Congress member Ahmed Saleem (Maaz Saleem) has claimed that the efforts to consolidate elections are a calculated maneuver to test the waters, which will eventually lead to discussions about extending the presidential term.
He made these remarks while speaking at an MDP pickup truck rally on Sunday afternoon.
Saleem asserted that the current administration lacks transparency and is failing to work with sincerity. Highlighting that the government is engaging in numerous activities that facilitate corruption and embezzlement while keeping the public in the dark, Saleem noted that citizens have gained nothing since this administration took office. He further stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is currently governing by consolidating all powers. He warned that the government would attempt to prolong its rule by claiming it needs more time to achieve its objectives.
"After impoverishing and subjugating the people, they are now introducing this so-called referendum. This is a litmus test to see how much the public will tolerate. Their next move will be to extend their term in office, having already devastated the tourism industry and the economy," Maaz Saleem said.
He further stated that rampant corruption and embezzlement are occurring within the current administration, yet these cases remain uninvestigated despite being reported to the relevant authorities. Maaz Saleem noted that government operations have become disorganized, leaving the state unable to settle its financial obligations to the public. Saleem emphasized that it is unacceptable for some companies to delay salary payments until the middle of the month or to withhold the mandatory Ramadan allowance.
He stated that the public must reject the government's proposal to synchronize the upcoming local council, parliamentary, and presidential elections.
