Former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has stated that agreeing to consolidate elections at this time would lead to the total collapse of democracy, urging the public to reject the proposal.
Fayyaz made these remarks during an interview with RaajjeMV during the MDP's door-to-door campaign activities.
Fayyaz stated that the current administration has completely dismantled the entire governance framework of the Maldives, including the local council system. He emphasized that the public must reject the government in the upcoming local council elections to halt its current trajectory, warning that failure to do so would result in the country regressing significantly. Fayyaz further asserted that the administration is stripping away rights that Maldivians have fought for over generations. He urged citizens to utilize the council elections as a critical opportunity to stand against these actions.
"The MDP has always been a party that fields capable candidates. The government is attempting to consolidate influence and power. If the government is given this opportunity, the Maldivian economy will be completely devastated. The country's local council system will also be destroyed," Fayyaz said.
Highlighting that the People's National Congress (PNC) does not contest elections based on any clear policies, Fayyaz urged the public not to grant electoral victory to a party lacking a vision. Fayyaz stated that during his campaign visits to 39 islands for the local council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections, he found no island satisfied with the current government's performance.
