As excitement builds for the upcoming local council elections, parents of students at R. Dhuvaafaru Primary School have expressed concern over the school's principal, Mohamed Anees, directly participating in political activities. The principal reportedly represented a People's National Congress (PNC) candidate and attended the official draw for candidate numbers.
The lucky draw to determine the candidate numbers for the upcoming election was held last Thursday. During the proceedings, Principal Anees attended the draw to represent Ahmed Shah, the People's National Congress (PNC) candidate contesting for the presidency of the Dhuvaafaru Council.
According to Civil Service regulations, senior government officials are required to remain politically neutral and independent. Consequently, many are expressing concern, stating that it is unacceptable for the head of a school with over 500 students to be seen participating in such political activities.
According to several parents in Dhuvaafaru, there is no familial connection between Principal Anees and candidate Ahmed Shah. They allege that his decision to represent a political party's candidate was solely intended to demonstrate support for the government-backed contender and to exert undue influence over the election using the school's reputation.
Concerned parents have expressed their outrage, stating that such actions undermine the honor and integrity of Dhuvaafaru School. They further noted that it is shameful for educators responsible for raising the next generation to become politically biased and actively campaign for a specific candidate.
Dhuvaafaru Primary School serves as the educational cornerstone of the island, providing schooling from preschool through grade six. For the head of such an institution to exert political influence is a grave matter that jeopardizes the school's future and erodes the trust placed in it by its students.
Principal Mohamed Anees was unavailable for comment regarding this matter.
