Security commanders appointed as Maldives prepares for local council, WDC polls
MPS has appointed security commanders for the Local Council and WDC elections scheduled for April 4. Assistant Commissioner Abdulla Shareef will lead security operations, supported by deputy and tactical commanders. The elections will cover 226 constituencies across the Maldives.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has appointed commanders to oversee security operations for the upcoming Local Council Elections and Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections.
During a meeting at the Commissioner’s Office on Sunday, Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen officially presented the appointment letters to the designated commanders.
The discussions focused on ensuring a peaceful electoral process and creating a secure environment for all citizens throughout the election period.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Shareef has been appointed as the Security Commander for both the Local Council and WDC Elections. Chief Superintendent of Police Hussain Sameer will serve as Deputy Commander, while Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Athif has been designated as the Chief Technology Officer for the operation. In addition to this, Superintendent of Police Abdul Matheen Abdul Kareem has been appointed as the Tactical Commander.
The police institution is known for its thorough preparations ahead of national elections, appointing operational commanders to ensure security and facilitate a safe environment for the democratic process.
The Elections Commission has scheduled the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee Elections for 4 April 2026. The elections will cover a total of 226 constituencies, with representatives for both Local Councils and Women’s Development Committees to be elected.
