The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group has announced its decision to boycott the ongoing extraordinary sittings of the People’s Majlis, condemning the meetings as illegal and a violation of the Constitution.
MP for North Galolhu constituency Mohamed “Kudoo” Ibrahim took to social media platform ‘X’ to announce the boycott on Monday night.
The MDP parliamentary group reached a consensus to abstain from participating in the sittings as a formal protest against what they describe as serious legal irregularities. The lawmaker stressed that the emergency sittings, held during the parliamentary recess without adequate notice, directly contravene Articles 83 and 88 of the Constitution. He further alleged that these sittings were being convened hastily to facilitate rapid constitutional amendments.
Further, MP Kudoo argued that there is no constitutional crisis or urgent need that justifies the convening of these sittings in such an undemocratic manner. He also pointed out that the rushed nature of the proceedings undermines the fundamental right of citizens to proper representation.
