President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has forwarded the names of applicants for vacancies at two commissions, for parliamentary consideration.
The names forwarded for approval from the People’s Majlis were applicants for membership at the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
The President’s Office opened application opportunity for a vacancy at HRCM on Monday, after the expiration of the tenure of one of the members and after the People’s Majlis rejected previous applications sent for approval.
The vacancy at NIC was announced following the dismissal of its former President, Ahmed Sulaiman on August 9 by the president, following recommendations from the parliament.
Three of the members at the commission turned in their resignation following the parliament’s probe into the dismissal of four NIC members, they are; Vice President Hassaan Hameed and members Khadheeja Abdulla and Ahmed Ameen.
NIC comprises of five members and currently consists of recently appointed member, Colonel (Retired) Ahmed Jihad alone.
On September 8, the president appointed three new members to the commission; Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq, Moomina Waheed and Dr Ahmed Adham Abdulla.
The new appointees received approval from the People’s Majlis on September 6 and were among the eight names forwarded for the vacancies. Their names were approved by the committee on human rights and gender after further review which included interview sessions.
Application opportunity was opened for four membership posts at the commission on July 6 after the resignation of three members and the expiration of one member’s term, set for September 12.
Aminath Enas, Aishath Afreen Mohamed, and Moosa Ali Kaleyfaanu resigned in July amid impeachment motions at the parliament. Vice President Mohamed Zahid was removed from position through a parliamentary vote, on July 22.
According to the Human Rights Commission Act of the Maldives, the commission must comprise of five members.
