Maldives Police Service (MPS) has on Monday begun investigations into two reports published on Mihaaru News.
Raajje.mv understands that Police is investigating a report written by Mohamed Ameen on March 10th regarding negligent treatment of inmates and another report written by Muizz Ibrahim and Asiyath Mohamed Saeed on March 19th on unjust verdicts. One of the reports was filed for investigations by Department of Judicial Administration and the other was filed for investigation by Criminal Court.
Mihaaru news Managing Editor Ismail Naseer was summoned to Police on Monday night. Police have confirmed the summons.
The summons comes a day after Criminal Court issued a statement, warning of legal action, if they carry on with their reportage of certain events, in an angle which the Court says “encourages terrorism”.
A statement released in Dhivehi Language, on Sunday, Criminal Court said that some media sources had an agenda of defaming the Government, senior Government officials and state institutions. The statement went on to add that these medias have attempted to destroy public confidence in the Government and institutions.
