Discussions focused on lack of opportunities to political events

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has raised their concerns to Elections Commission (EC) over the issue of forced membership to ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM).

The meeting, held on Wednesday, was led by Party’s Deputy Chairperson Ali Niyaz. EC Vice President Ahmed Akram and other members of the Commission attended the session.

Speaking to Rajje.mv, Ali Niyaz said the discussions had centered on three core issues. He said the three issues were forced memberships, lack of meetings of the National Advisory Committee for the Local Council Elections and bans on MDP to hold political events and rallies.

Niyaz questioned whether the sessions of the Advisory Committee were halted after MDP had shared the decisions of the Committee with the press.

Niyaz said these issues had been raised to the EC and relevant bodies, adding that he hoped a solution would be found to the issues.
