The biggest issue facing Maldivians currently is deemed the issue of a lack of shelter to most of the citizens, who continue to stress that the apartments in Malé City are not affordable. Thus far, none of the administrations that have come and gone have been able to resolve this issue.

During a press conference earlier this month, the Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Mohamed Aslam stated that there are about 21,013 families residing in locations unfit for families and that it is a target of the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih administration to provide shelter for these individuals.

Highlighting that there are several families living in congested spaces in the country’s capital, Aslam noted that about 21,013 such families are living in spaces smaller than 600 square meters. The government deems spaces smaller than 600 square meters inadequate to live in.
