Maldives Parliament, on Wednesday, accepted the education bill, proposed by the government.

69 parliamentarians voted in favor of the bill, while there was on against, and one abstention.

The bill has not been sent to the parliament committee on National Development, for further review.

It was proposed by pro-government representative, MP for Funadhoo constituency, Ali Saleem.

The bill “aims to develop Maldives’ educational framework in line with international cultural, economic, and social policies, and to create equal opportunities for all.”

It also seeks to provide equal opportunities for the citizens, in providing opportunities for higher education, and to create an environment that will guarantee equal opportunities for all children.

The 19-chapter long bill consists of 59 Articles.

While none of the parliamentarians who took part in Wednesday’s debate had spoken against the bill, the opposition did, however, express concern over how the bill was structured, calling to seek professional assistance.

The opposition emphasized the importance of forming a professional and independent institution, to oversee the education sector.
