MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says that the issues of nation stem from the Parliament.

Speaking in the joint press conference held by MDP, PPM, JP and AP, Hinnavaru Constituency Member Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said the process of holding the Government accountable had halted with the changes brought to the Constitution.

He cited the changes brought to the Financial Act, which now allows the Government to issue sovereign bonds to whomever they see fit. He also added that the right to assembly had also been restricted.

“The main issues to the nation had begun due to the Parliament,” he said.

JP Parliamentary Group’s Deputy Leader and Kimbidhoo Constituency MP Abdullah Riyaz added that the Parliament was now run autocratically and the Parliament was unable to hold the Government accountable.

“This is why we have reservations over the Speaker,” Riyaz said.

Riyaz added that the no confidence motion was put forward in a bid to curtail injustice. He said the sale of land by way of intimidation and bribery was unacceptable, with the Parliament now effectively a rubber stamp for the Government.

“Ousting the Speaker of Parliament is a must on all Members,” he said.

Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon said the Parliament and Parliamentarians are unable to fulfill their mandate. He said the Speaker’s removal was an essential start to this process. He added that he had tried to work within PPM Parliamentary Group and Council to bring in changes, but had failed in the effort. MP Faris assured the motion against the Speaker will be passed with a majority.

Makunudhoo Constituency MP Anara Naeem added that she hoped that all issues will be resolved.

Speaking to press, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih added the amendment to law that allowed foreign ownership of land will be revered, along with all amendments that impact on public rights. He assured the coalition of Parties will remain together until these are achieved.
