Lawmakers that vote for the no-confidence motion against parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh will have the full support of the four opposition parties if they choose to contest for another term, Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim has said.

MP Ibrahim said at a JP gathering at Kunooz, its primary party camp, that the other opposition parties Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the Progressive Party of Maldives’ faction loyal to former longstanding president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and the Adhaalath Party would give MPs that back the motion the ticket to contest in any constituency of their choosing for the 2019 parliamentary elections.

“Any member that presses green at [Monday’s] vote will have the full support of all four parties, and we shall ensure that he not only has a ticket but everything else he needs to be elected again” the Maamigili constituency representative said on Sunday night.

The JP and MDP have issued a three-line whip for the vote.

The motion of no-confidence, filed on 8th March, will entered parliament on Monday.

The six-point motion further accuses Maseeh of ‘refusing to ensure’ equality in parliament, disregarding the rule of law, disrespecting the system of checks and balances, disregard for procedure, and ‘subverting’ democracy.
