Broadcom's ex-VP Sofwan resigns

He had sent in a letter to the parliament speaker, informing of his decision to resign

Former Vice President at the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) Ismail Sofwan has resigned from the commission.

Parliament’s committee on independent institutions’ chair Meedhoo constituency MP Rozaina Adam revealed this via Twitter on Wednesday.

She also attached his resignation letter to the tweet, which was addressed to Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

In the letter, Sofwan said that he is unable to attend work as he is 'required to undergo a long medical procedure.'

He said that the decision to resign was reached as this “is an obstacle to fulfilling [his] responsibilities.”

Sofwan also denied using his authority to influence any members of Broadcom, a claim made by the commission members after being presented to the committee last week.

“I have never prioritized my own interests, as commission chair”

Furthermore, Sofwan said that despite his long leave from work, that commission members “had not sought to clear the matter.”

According to Broadcom members, Sofwan has been missing work since last year’s presidential elections. Despite this, they said that he had been taking “full salary.”

The committee on independent institution had passed to summon Sofwan for questioning, on Wednesday, before compiling its report on the no-confidence motion submitted against him.
