Employees of the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) have reported that some staff members are yet to receive their salaries for the month of September.
While reports have emerged indicating that the company's employees have faced salary issues over the past 10 months, the company has yet to issue a statement on the matter. Since last December, several employees have experienced delays in receiving their wages, with these issues recurring on a monthly basis for a portion of the workforce.
As relevant officials from WAMCO have declined to comment on the matter, the specific reasons for the delay and the exact number of affected employees remain unclear. The corporation has similarly withheld information regarding previous instances of salary delays.
Several employees who spoke to RaajjeTV expressed that the current administration has significantly neglected workers' rights. They reported that some Maldivian staff at WAMCO have not received their salaries even by the middle of the month, while foreign employees reportedly remain unpaid as late as the final ten days of the month.
In addition to salary delays, Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) is facing growing concerns regarding the non-payment of employee pension contributions. Issues have surfaced indicating that although pension deductions are being withheld from staff salaries, these funds are not being deposited into their respective pension accounts. Furthermore, the mandatory Ramadan allowance was only disbursed to employees following media coverage and widespread public criticism. As administrative mismanagement within WAMCO continues to come to light, a senior official at the corporation, speaking on condition of anonymity, alleged that the management is intimidating staff. The official stated that some employees are being threatened to remain silent and refrain from speaking out about the non-payment of their wages.
Addressing management's allegations that companies have failed to settle their dues with WAMCO, he stated that the corporation receives significant daily cash inflows and that companies are indeed paying their bills. He further noted that while some companies occasionally face delays in making payments, they do eventually settle their invoices.
He stated that this is merely an excuse and does not represent the actual issue. He further noted that numerous political appointments have already been made at the company's expense, involving individuals who simply clock in and go home. Additionally, he mentioned that some employees spend their working hours playing cards and various other games within the office.
However, he noted that the salaries of political appointees are significantly higher than those of the company's regular staff, and that these officials face no issues regarding their pay. He further stated that they receive their salaries even before the start of the month and were also provided their Ramadan allowance ahead of schedule.
Highlighting the dire financial state of WAMCO, he warned that if the current trend continues, services will soon be disrupted and the company will face total bankruptcy. He further noted that the corporation is already operating at a loss.
