Mayor Azim: Male' City Council could save MVR 40 million annually if residents maintain cleanliness

Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has stated that the City Council could save 40 million Rufiyaa annually if residents maintain better standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
Azim made these remarks while speaking at a special cleaning event held at the Artificial Beach area, organized by the Male' City Council to mark International Coastal Cleanup Day.
Azim stated that one of the most demanding and significant tasks undertaken by the Male' City Council is the cleaning of the city and the collection of waste.
Azim stated that while WAMCO collects 800 tons of waste, the City Council manages the collection of 25 tons daily. He further noted that WAMCO charges the Male' City Council an additional 10 percent for waste disposal. Mayor Azim highlighted that if WAMCO charges the general public 1,000 Rufiyaa for waste disposal, they charge the Council 10,000 Rufiyaa for the same service.
The waste being discarded across Male' is generated by its own residents; it is not the work of outsiders. Both expatriates and locals contribute to the waste produced in the city. If we all become more mindful and take collective action, we could save between 3 to 4 million Rufiyaa every month. These funds could then be redirected toward other essential services for the people of Male'. On an annual basis, this amounts to a potential saving of 40 million Rufiyaa. Furthermore, Azim emphasized that every step taken to make Male' City a clean environment is vital, noting that the responsibility for maintaining the city's cleanliness must be shared by everyone. He stated that cleanliness begins with the habits we cultivate daily and stressed the importance of reminding those who litter to dispose of their waste properly.
Furthermore, Azim highlighted the importance of reducing food waste, eliminating the use of single-use plastics, and ensuring responsible waste disposal.
