Littering on the streets of Malé.

Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has stated that the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) is responsible for the city's deteriorating cleanliness and accumulating litter.

Speaking at the 12th official meeting of the Male' City Council's fifth term, Mayor Azim stated that the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) is responsible for collecting waste from various sites across Male' City. The Mayor further emphasized that this responsibility extends to the collection of waste from the City Council premises as well as mosques within the Male' City area.

The Mayor further stated that WAMCO’s practice of charging the Council additional fees for waste collection is an act of injustice. Azim noted that collaborating with WAMCO has proven to be extremely difficult, highlighting that the corporation has failed to honor the agreements reached during their previous meetings. Despite these challenges, the Mayor affirmed his commitment to taking all necessary steps to reach a formal agreement with WAMCO.

Mayor Azim has also accused WAMCO of acting in violation of their agreements with the intent of causing harm to the City Council.

The Mayor has urged the public to refrain from littering the streets and to utilize the services provided by WAMCO. Additionally, Mayor Azim called on WAMCO to enhance its capacity to better serve the citizens.

Residents of Malé, Hulhumalé, and Villimalé are currently discarding waste onto the streets due to the limited operational capacity of WAMCO. However, I urge the public to refrain from littering the streets and instead contact WAMCO to utilize their official services. Furthermore, I call upon WAMCO to prioritize expanding their capacity and focus on delivering a higher standard of service.
Adam Azim

Furthermore, Mayor Azim commended the employees of WAMCO, praising them for their exceptional diligence and hard work.

The Male' City Council is set to pay MVR 35 million to the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) for waste collection services in the capital throughout 2025. In light of these figures, the City Council has decided to formally communicate the budgetary allocation to WAMCO.

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has announced that it generated a profit of MVR 24 million over the past year, 2025.
