Despite the project being contracted to WAMCO a significant time ago, the delay in physical works has forced waste onto the island's beaches, further exacerbating environmental degradation.

Ahmed Nasru, President of the Hulhudheli Island Council, has stated that no practical work has commenced at the Dhaalu Hulhudheli Waste Management Center, despite it being handed over to the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) a year and a half ago.
In an interview with RaajjeTV, Nasru stated that staff have already been recruited to begin operations at the waste management center.
He further noted that while the center was under the council's jurisdiction, the waste disposal area was sheltered. However, since the facility was handed over to WAMCO, those structures have been removed. He stated that the removal of these shelters has led to increased mosquito breeding within the waste piles, resulting in a rise in disease outbreaks across the island.
It has now been a year and a half since this project was handed over to WAMCO. No practical work has commenced, despite staff already being recruited. The Council remains unclear on the reasons for this ongoing delay. What is certain is that the escalating waste issue has led to a significant outbreak of illness on the island. When the facility was under the Council's management, it was kept sheltered; however, since WAMCO took over, the roofing and structures have been removed. This has left the waste exposed to rainfall, creating stagnant water and breeding grounds for mosquitoes.Ahmed Nasru
Nasru stated that the lack of an additional waste management facility in Hulhudheli has resulted in waste being dumped into the ocean, which is subsequently washing up on the island's beaches. Furthermore, Nasru noted that the council has not been informed of the reasons behind the project's lack of progress.
The management of the Hulhudheli Waste Management Center was officially handed over to WAMCO in February 2025. At the time, President Muizzu stated that operations at the facility would commence within four months. However, to date, no practical work has been initiated on the project.
