MP Ibrahim Questions WAMCO MD Over Hulhumalé Lagoon Pollution

Member of Parliament for North Galolhu, Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), has submitted a motion to question the Managing Director of Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO), Mujthaba Jaleel, regarding the pollution of the Hulhumalé lagoon caused by waste falling into the water during disposal operations.
The member has submitted these inquiries and formally addressed a letter to the Managing Director of WAMCO.
In the letter, the member noted that complaints have been brought to his attention regarding environmental pollution caused by waste falling into the lagoon during waste management operations in Hulhumalé. The member further stated that he believes WAMCO bears the responsibility to protect the residents of Hulhumalé from the potential health risks and negative social impacts resulting from this issue.
Consequently, the member has submitted seven questions seeking further details regarding this matter.
Specifically, WAMCO has been requested to identify the root causes of waste entering the Hulhumalé lagoon and to clarify whether the disposal of waste from transport vessels into the water is a result of negligence or specific operational challenges. Furthermore, inquiries were made regarding whether any measures are being taken to mitigate the adverse effects of lagoon pollution on the environment and marine life of Hulhumalé, and to provide details on any such ongoing efforts.
Furthermore, the member’s inquiry sought to identify a permanent solution to the pollution and foul odors affecting the lagoon due to waste accumulation. The member also questioned whether the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had taken any regulatory action against WAMCO regarding this issue. Additionally, the member requested clarification on whether WAMCO and HDC are collaborating on any initiatives to clean and maintain the Hulhumalé lagoon. The inquiry further sought details on the measures being implemented to ensure that waste collection vessels are managed in a manner that prevents trash from falling into the water.
