Mohamed Shahid, the former President of the Meedhoo Island Council, has expressed concern over the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) site in Dhaalu Atoll Meedhoo, stating that the facility has been abandoned and is currently being used as a makeshift dumpsite.
In an interview with RaajjeTV, Shahid stated that although staff were recruited for WAMCO’s operations in Meedhoo over a year ago, no productive work benefiting the public has taken place. He further noted that the facility remains a desolate site with no signs of activity.
Shahid stated that during the previous council's term, MVR 200,000 was spent to clear a significant amount of waste from the landfill site to facilitate WAMCO's operations. However, he noted that no suitable working environment or proper facilities had been established for the employees.
Under the Employment Act as we know it, we cannot simply place employees in a location and claim they are state employees without further action. Defining the specific duties of an employee and providing a designated workspace are the most basic requirements of employment. Yet, these individuals have been stationed at these locations without even these fundamental necessities being addressed.Mohamed Shahid
Furthermore, Shahid stated that there is a complete lack of transparency in the current administration's actions, adding that the government has no vision for developing or improving such facilities in the islands. He also noted that the equipment brought in to establish the WAMCO site is deteriorating, describing the situation as a matter of serious concern.
Highlighting the island's waste management system, Shahid noted that the current method of disposal at the local waste site is limited to open burning. He further stated that he had received information indicating only a single WAMCO employee is currently stationed on the island, amid circulating rumors that the company’s operations there have been discontinued.
