The administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has requested a $100 million financial facility from Malaysia. This was revealed during the ongoing official visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to the Maldives.
Furthermore, the Maldives and Malaysia agreed on Tuesday to further strengthen their defense and economic cooperation. The leaders of both nations also announced that the Malaysian government has agreed in principle to provide a $100 million financial facility requested by the Maldivian government.
Speaking at a joint press conference held in Malé with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced that the two nations have decided to expand their bilateral relations to include cooperation in the fields of defense and Islamic affairs.
President Muizzu has invited the Malaysian government and business community to explore investment opportunities in the Maldives. The President specifically encouraged investment in renewable energy, digital infrastructure, construction, and Islamic finance.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the Malaysian government has agreed in principle to facilitate a $100 million facility requested by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) from Malaysia's central bank, Bank Negara Malaysia.
"We have now reached an agreement in principle to provide assistance in this matter," Anwar stated. The Prime Minister further noted that the central banks of both countries will collaborate to establish the necessary frameworks and procedures to finalize these arrangements at the earliest possible date.
Furthermore, Anwar highlighted the exploration and research of underground minerals as an additional sector where economic ties between the two countries could be strengthened.
During the meeting, both parties agreed to streamline visa procedures between the two nations, expand scholarship opportunities for Maldivian students in Malaysia, and collaborate on joint scientific research initiatives.
