Theft is not merely a reflection of an individual's moral decline; in a society where it prevails, there can be no peace or security: Muizzu

President Muizzu emphasized that Islamic Sharia guarantees the protection of property and encourages the pursuit of wealth through lawful means, while highlighting that theft and robbery are grave threats that undermine social stability. In his remarks, the President also reflected on the profound sense of trust and security that historically characterized Maldivian society.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that crimes such as theft, robbery, usury, and fraud are strictly prohibited and forbidden in Islam. He further emphasized that the faith commands everyone to refrain from all forms of social corruption and misconduct.

He made these remarks while speaking at a ceremony held Saturday night at Hulhumalé Central Park to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the Maldives embracing Islam, according to the Hijri calendar.

In his remarks, President Muizzu emphasized that the protection of property is one of the most fundamental rights guaranteed to individuals under Islamic Sharia. He noted that while Islam strictly prohibits theft, robbery, and embezzlement, it provides a clear framework for individuals to build wealth and earn a living through honest and lawful means. Furthermore, the President highlighted that engaging in ethical and Sharia-compliant trade is a practice highly encouraged and supported within Islam.

Furthermore, President Muizzu stated that theft is not merely a lapse in an individual's character, nor is robbery just a source of temporary fear. Instead, he emphasized that such acts are the result of a far more tragic and dangerous social and national condition, reflecting the extent to which humanity has been reduced to ashes within a society. He further noted that in such an environment, there can be no peace, security, or tranquility of heart.

Reflecting on the lifestyle of ancestors, President Muizzu stated that historical records show the society built by Maldivians following their conversion to Islam centuries ago was free from such social evils. He noted that during that era, there was no need to lock the main doors of homes. The President further remarked that Maldivians once experienced a time of profound mutual trust, where shopkeepers would simply hand over their keys to customers, or allow them to take goods by merely noting it in a ledger if they lacked the immediate funds to pay.

In those days, there was no need to lock the main doors of our homes. In some islands, shopkeepers would hand over the keys to customers coming to make a purchase. Alternatively, if the shop was already open, the owner would simply tell them to take what they needed and, if they didn't have the money at hand, to just note it down in the ledger on the desk before leaving. This is a reality experienced by many. This is the foundation of Islamic trust that Maldivians once knew.

President Muizzu stated that Islam is not merely a spiritual religion, but a comprehensive system of spiritual discipline, psychological solace, material guidance, and moral truth. He further emphasized that Islam is a sublime divine blessing, providing humanity with all forms of safety and security.
