Cabinet decides to restrict accessibility of SIM cards for expatriates working in Maldives

Under the new regulations, replacement SIM cards for lost or damaged units can only be obtained through a specialized police process, while legal action will be taken against registered owners of SIM cards found smuggled into prisons.

The Cabinet has decided to tighten regulations on the issuance of SIM cards to expatriates working in the Maldives.
During the Cabinet meeting held on Sunday, August 16, 2026, it was deliberated and decided to restrict the issuance of SIM cards to unskilled expatriate workers to a maximum of one card per individual.
Furthermore, it has been decided that in the event a SIM card is damaged or lost, no replacement number will be issued except through a specific process involving a formal report to the police.
Furthermore, a decision has been made to ensure that necessary legal and administrative actions are taken against individuals under whose names mobile SIM cards smuggled into prisons are registered.
