The President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shahid, has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration lacks any genuine goodwill toward the public and has brought the people to their knees.
Speaking at the "Dhathivejje" rally held by the MDP on Thursday night, Shahid stated that the public is expressing that the situation in the Maldives has become unbearable. He further noted that the green signals the people had hoped for have now turned red, and the dreams promised by the current administration to gain power have turned into a mirage.
Furthermore, Shahid noted that inflation has reached its highest level in 13 years in 2025, highlighting an unprecedented surge in the cost of goods.
Looking at the price trends over the past four years, an item that cost 100 Rufiyaa between 2025 and May 2026 would now cost 122 Rufiyaa today.Abdulla Shahid
Furthermore, Shahid stated that the public is expressing distress as the cost of living continues to rise while salaries remain stagnant and no new avenues for income are being created. He asserted that, as a result, this administration has failed significantly.
Referring to the government's current austerity measures, Shahid stated that the administration is terminating ordinary employees from state-owned enterprises, describing these actions as an act of cruelty against the people. He further noted that while numerous workers were dismissed just last week, the government continues to appoint hundreds of individuals to political positions, including Deputy Ministers and State Ministers.
Shahid stated that the current administration lacks sincerity and has left the public in a state of vulnerability and neglect. He further noted that the people are now overwhelmingly rejecting the government, asserting that the MDP will bring about a change in administration.
