During Tuesday's Parliament sitting, Thoddoo MP Hussain Sameer raised inquiries regarding the number of political appointments. The lawmaker requested a formal disclosure comparing the total number of political staff employed between 2018 and 2023 against the figures recorded since late 2023.
Responding to the question, Minister Zareer stated that the appointment of individuals to political positions is a power vested in the President under Article 115 of the Constitution. The Minister further noted that President Muizzu has already announced that necessary changes will be made to these appointments, and that the process of implementing these adjustments is currently underway.

However, the Minister did not disclose the total number of political appointees made since President Muizzu assumed office in 2023. Responding to a subsequent inquiry from the Member of Parliament for South Galolhu, Mickail Ahmed Naseem, Minister Zareer stated his belief that all state recruitments are conducted in accordance with established regulations and maintained that no staff have been hired outside of these official policies.
The government has refused to disclose the total number of political appointees appointed under President Muizzu's administration. Despite numerous inquiries directed at both President Muizzu and the Minister of Finance, the administration has repeatedly declined to release these figures.
Since the current administration took office, there has been an unprecedented surge in the appointment of political staff. This influx has led to overcrowding within government ministries, with mounting complaints regarding the lack of adequate workspace for employees in several offices.
