The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into a major disturbance that occurred near a ballot box in Hulhumalé during the internal elections of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC), which resulted in damage to state property.

Disturbances broke out at Kamil Didi School, where the ballot box for the North Hulhumalé constituency was located, during the election held on Saturday.

Videos of the incident currently circulating on social media show a violent confrontation breaking out, with several PNC members present seen physically assaulting one another.

Furthermore, it has been noted that significant damage was inflicted upon state property within the center. Footage clearly depicts individuals throwing chairs and other items, resulting in the destruction of property.

Video footage of the incident shows the crowd defying police orders and attempting to escalate the unrest as officers worked to bring the situation under control. The incident has since sparked widespread public criticism.

When questioned regarding the matter, a police media official stated that an investigation is underway into an incident where a group of individuals forcibly entered a school in Hulhumalé Phase 2 during the vote counting of an internal political party election. According to the police, the incident occurred at approximately 21:15 on the night of July 11, 2026. The group reportedly caused damage to the school premises and property, and committed acts of violence against those present at the scene.

Police have launched an investigation into the matter following serious allegations of property damage to the school and acts of violence against individuals on the premises.

As voting concluded for this election, PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla stated that the PNC is a party that consistently prioritizes peace and stability. He further criticized the opposition MDP, mockingly alleging that they incite unrest during their elections.

However, despite the significant unrest during the PNC internal elections and the resulting damage to state property, senior party officials have refused to comment on whether the party will take responsibility for these actions when questioned by the media.

85 percent of eligible voters turned out for PNC constituency elections: Abdul Raheem

PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla stated that the participation of approximately 33,000 members in the party's internal constituency elections demonstrates clear public confidence in President Dr. Muizzu. While he characterized the election—which saw 2,300 candidates vying for various leadership positions—as a significant step forward for the party's administrative structure, observers note that recent electoral trends in the Maldives continue to raise questions regarding the actual extent of the government's popular support.

MPL to be summoned to Parliament over vessel owners' losses due to North Harbor conditions

Complaints are mounting over the Maldives Ports Limited’s (MPL) new queuing system at the Male’ North Harbor, which has forced island-bound cargo vessels to wait up to 15 days to dock, significantly reducing the frequency of trips. This delay is causing substantial financial losses for vessel owners and disrupting the supply of goods to the atolls, prompting the Member of Parliament for Galolhu North to request that MPL officials be summoned before a parliamentary committee to find an urgent solution. Furthermore, the MP highlighted concerns regarding the lack of adequate services provided at the harbor despite the fees being charged.

Muizzu rules podiums while logic takes a back seat

Muizzu is facing criticism for inconsistent standards after refusing to answer party-related questions at an official briefing while later using a political rally to discuss state business. During a partisan event, the leader utilized government data to critique past financial liabilities and justify rising domestic debt. This selective use of platforms suggests the administration employs official protocols to avoid difficult inquiries while blurring the lines between state and party interests.

Sodiq takes oath of office, bringing MDP’s parliamentary strength to 13!

Abdulla Sodiq, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate who won the Hithadhoo North constituency by-election, has officially taken his oath of office and commenced his duties in Parliament. By defeating the candidate from the ruling People's National Congress (PNC), Sodiq’s victory increases the MDP’s parliamentary representation to 13 members. The seat became vacant after the Supreme Court disqualified the previous incumbent for failing to meet constitutional requirements due to a proven debt.
