Hanimaadhoo Hospital Construction Stalls After Foundation Work
The Hanimaadhoo Island Council has expressed deep concern over the lack of progress on the construction of a new 30-bed hospital, despite the President having already laid the foundation stone for the project. Although the contract was initially awarded to RDC, the work has come to a standstill after being subcontracted to a third party, fueling public frustration over the persistent challenges facing the island's healthcare services.

The Hanimaadhoo Island Council has expressed concern over the lack of progress on the construction of a new 30-bed hospital, noting that no work has been carried out since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu laid the foundation stone for the project.
According to Firaq Mohamed, Vice President of the Hanimaadhoo Island Council, no further progress has been made on the project since President Muizzu laid the foundation stone on August 25, 2025. Aside from the initial concrete poured by the President to mark the occasion, the site has seen no additional work to date. The official groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the President along with then-Health Minister Abdulla Nazim, who jointly inaugurated the commencement of the project.

You heard the President's visit to Hanimaadhoo and the talk of laying foundations in these rural islands. It was on August 25, 2025, that they came to this island as well and laid these foundations. Even if you look at it now, this is exactly what we see.Vice President of Hanimaadhoo Council, Firaq Mohamed
He further stated that although the two-story hospital is planned for construction on a vast 30,000-square-foot plot, only an area of approximately 5,000 square feet has been excavated thus far. He noted that the site is currently flooded and pointed out that no further progress has been made since the initial work carried out on the day the foundation stone was laid.
This is an attempt to capture a photo of the concrete poured that day, roughly two to three days after the work was completed. While the site was officially handed over to the Road Development Corporation (RDC), reports indicate that the project was subcontracted to a third party. This is the reason the work has currently come to a standstill.Firaq Mohamed, Vice President of the Hanimaadhoo Island Council
The prolonged suspension of this project, initiated to address the healthcare challenges faced by the residents of Hanimaadhoo, has become a major grievance for the local community. The Island Council has expressed significant concern over the lack of progress, noting that the project stalled after the contractor, Road Development Corporation (RDC), subcontracted the work to a third party.
