Marvin sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of his wife, Mary
The Criminal Court has sentenced Marvin S.Y. Vargas or Yusuf, to 25 years in prison after finding him guilty of the murder of his wife, Mary Grace, a nurse at IGMH. While his accomplice, Haleemath Lamha, was also convicted on related charges, the state had sought an enhanced penalty citing the professional background of the defendants in the healthcare sector and the particularly cruel nature of the crime. Following the deduction of time already served in pre-trial detention, Yusuf is now required to serve a remaining sentence of 20 years.

The Criminal Court has sentenced Marvin S.Y. Vargas (Yusuf) to 25 years in prison after finding him guilty of the murder of Mary Grace, who was employed at IGMH.
In the murder case of Mary Grace, the presiding judge has found her husband guilty of aiding and abetting intentional homicide. Furthermore, the court has also convicted Haleemath Lamha on charges of complicity in the murder, along with all other additional charges brought against her.
Consequently, during the sentencing hearing held on Wednesday, the prosecution requested an enhancement of their sentences. The state justified this request on the grounds that the defendants are healthcare professionals who committed these acts out of self-interest, demonstrating a cruel disregard for human dignity.
Regarding the sentencing, Yusuf's defense counsel argued that, based on the facts of the case, the charges brought against him do not pertain to actions carried out in the course of his professional duties.
Furthermore, the defense counsel stated that although the prosecution claims Mary and Yusuf's child suffered harm in connection with this case, none of the documents submitted by the state prove that the child sustained any psychological damage. The lawyer added that while any child would naturally be affected by the death of their mother, the state is merely attempting to project a specific narrative.
Yusuf's lawyer described him as an individual of "good character" who had been working in a responsible position since arriving in the Maldives. Highlighting that he had no prior criminal record, the defense requested the court to grant him the maximum possible leniency in sentencing.
Taking into account the arguments presented by both sides, the presiding judge sentenced Yusuf to 25 years in prison. The judge further ruled that the 4 years and 8 months he has already spent in custody will be deducted from the total sentence, leaving him to serve a remaining term of 20 years.
