The Criminal Court has scheduled the sentencing of Marvin S.Y. and Maldivian nurse Haleemath Lamha for July 1, following their conviction in the murder of Mary Grace, a Filipino nurse who was employed at IGMH.
The court ruled on Monday that the charges brought against the two individuals by the state have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
In this case, the state has charged Mary’s husband, Marvin, with first-degree murder. Following his conviction, he is likely to face a sentence of life imprisonment. Marvin’s alleged lover, Lamha, has been found guilty on three separate counts. These include aiding and abetting murder, unauthorized interference with another person’s property, and carrying out a restricted activity without the required legal authorization.
Under the Penal Code of the Maldives, complicity in intentional homicide is classified among the most serious offenses. Planning a murder, inciting the act, or providing the necessary means to carry it out constitutes a criminal offense. The law mandates severe penalties for such crimes, granting the judiciary the authority to impose sentences of either life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Regarding the other charges proven against Lamha, the standard penalty for the unauthorized control of another person’s property is a prison sentence of nine months and 18 days. Additionally, the standard sentence for performing an activity without a required permit is one month and six days in prison. Both Marvin and Lamha remained in custody throughout the duration of the trial.
