Thousands of people across Malé City and various islands joined the "Employment Thursday" protest on Thursday night, an initiative led by the opposition MDP to voice concerns against the ongoing dismissal of employees from various government institutions and state-owned enterprises.
The march in Malé City commenced from the Rasfannu area.
The protest, which began on Boduthakurufaanu Magu, proceeded along the ring road before turning into Ameenee Magu. After marching through the area, the demonstrators gathered at the Artificial Beach, where the event concluded. The march saw the participation of senior MDP leadership and general members, alongside a significant number of employees who have recently been dismissed from their jobs.
Protesters voiced their demands for the reinstatement of employees they claim were unfairly dismissed, while calling for greater government accountability. Furthermore, the demonstrators called for the resignation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and his administration.
During the protest, the MDP declared its unwavering commitment to advocating for the rights of all employees dismissed by President Muizzu’s administration. The party further assured that it would provide all necessary assistance to those affected. The MDP also pledged that under a future MDP government, employment would be reinstated for every individual who was unfairly dismissed by the current administration.
In addition to the nationwide protests held on Thursday, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced plans to establish a specialized legal aid mechanism. This system is designed to support individuals facing politically motivated dismissals from employment and those targeted with political prosecutions. The MDP further called upon all citizens to raise their voices in opposition to such government actions.
