The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has pledged to take all necessary measures to defend the freedom of the press.
Speaking at a press conference held at the MDP headquarters on Thursday, MDP National Congress member Hussain Hassan stated that the party has been back on track following the chairperson election. He further emphasized that the party has worked tirelessly to advocate for journalists' rights, even during challenging times.
Emphasizing that the MDP will always stand in defense of journalists, Hussain noted that some party members are already facing legal charges as a result of these efforts. However, he asserted that they would not back down and would remain steadfast in this commitment.
Furthermore, Hussain stated that as a result of these efforts, it is evident across the entire country that the current administration has lost the support and popularity of the people.
God willing, we will do everything in our power to ensure that the courts in this country operate with integrity and justice, and to defend the freedom of the press. We have consistently carried out this work, even through the most challenging times. It is because we persevered through those difficulties and continued our efforts that charges are now being brought against our members. Charges have been filed against Member of Parliament Mauroof Zakir, as well as National Council member Zaya, along with six other individuals. This is the injustice this government is subjecting us to as a direct result of the work we are doing for you, for journalists, and for the Maldivian people.MDP National Congress Member Hussain Hassan
Speaking at the press conference, former Member of Parliament for the Dhaandhoo constituency, Yauqoob Abdulla, stated that if there is one institution that stands in defense of journalists, it is the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). He emphasized that the MDP’s very foundations are rooted in the pursuit of press freedom.
The MDP was founded on the principles of protecting journalists and their rights, rooted in the understanding that democracy cannot exist without a free press. Therefore, the MDP will not remain silent or fail to take the necessary actions to defend journalists. That is our primary commitment. Secondly, our efforts to hold the government accountable are comprehensive; there is no specific issue we will overlook. Regardless of the sector or direction we focus on, we continue to encounter significant and systemic concerns.Former Member of Parliament for the Dhaandhoo constituency, Yauqoob Abdulla.
Furthermore, Yauqoob stated that the MDP would proceed with its activities in a strategic and organized manner, rather than taking a disorganized approach.
He stated that the primary focus would initially be on cases of unfair dismissal and suspension. He further emphasized that the MDP would not cease its efforts until these issues are resolved.
