MDP Chairperson Election: Nasheed secures victory with a significant lead!
In the election held to appoint the 7th Chairperson of the MDP, former President Nasheed competed against Member of Parliament Meekail Ahmed Naseem. The election, which saw voting hours extended due to inclement weather, was triggered by the resignation of the previous chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail. Following a highly competitive campaign, provisional results indicate that President Nasheed has secured the lead.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has secured a lead in the election for the Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Provisional results indicate that President Nasheed has secured a lead in the election, where he is competing against Mickail Ahmed Naseem, the Member of Parliament for the South Galolhu constituency. Results from a significant number of ballot boxes have been received so far.
Voting for the election took place on Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Although the deadline was extended twice, the polls were originally scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. The party had previously announced on Thursday that voting would continue until 8:30 p.m. However, no specific reason was provided for the subsequent extensions.
On Friday, the party extended the voting deadline for a second time due to delays caused by adverse weather conditions affecting several polling stations. As a result, polling continued until 9:00 p.m.
Both candidates conducted their election campaigns with great enthusiasm and a high degree of competitiveness.
This election was held to appoint the 7th Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Following the resignation of former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, the position is currently being filled in an interim capacity by Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, the Member of Parliament for the Hanimaadhoo constituency.
