The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to extend the voting period for its internal chairperson election by 30 minutes.
Voting for the election scheduled for Friday was originally set to take place from 2:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. However, the MDP announced on Thursday that the polling window has now been extended until 8:30 p.m. The party did not disclose a reason for the change in the voting schedule.
With this change, voting for the election scheduled for Friday, June 12, 2026, will take place from 2:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. According to the election timeline, eligibility to vote is restricted to those registered as members on the MDP registry as of April 22 this year.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed and Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem are the two candidates contesting for the position of Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). As the election fever intensifies, senior party officials are traveling to various islands across the country to conduct vigorous campaign activities and drum up support for the two candidates.
As this is a crucial election aimed at strengthening the internal governance of the MDP, a high voter turnout is expected. The extension of voting hours is seen as a measure to ensure that as many members as possible have the opportunity to cast their ballots.
