The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced that efforts are underway to restore elevator services at Tower 14 of the Hiyaa flats.
Despite the installation of elevators, growing public frustration is mounting as they remain out of service for an extended period.
Therefore, when contacted by RaajjeMV for further information regarding the matter, the company stated that commissioning work must be carried out even after the elevators are installed. He noted that these efforts are currently underway. Furthermore, he stated that the current progress of the work on the 14th tower would need to be further reviewed.
HDC stated that efforts are underway to resolve the difficulties faced by the public, adding that they are working to complete the task as quickly as possible to ensure the facilities are available for public use.
Public complaints are mounting over the prolonged unavailability of elevators, leading to significant congestion, particularly during peak hours. Residents of Hiyaa Tower 14 have highlighted that the extended elevator downtime has caused severe difficulties for families with young children and the elderly, who are struggling to cope with the resulting overcrowding and lack of access.
The project to install additional elevators in the Hiyaa towers was initiated as part of the current administration's first 100-day pledges.
While the Hiyaa flats house a large population, most towers are equipped with only three elevators, with only a few featuring four. Due to the high density of residents in these 25-story buildings, the elevators are constantly overburdened, resulting in persistent queues. The congestion is particularly severe during the morning and afternoon rush hours, coinciding with school and office commutes, when wait times for elevators in the Hiyaa towers typically peak.
To address this issue, President Muizzu has pledged to install additional elevators in the Hiyaa flats.
