Subletting of Fahi Flats: One individual fined and three others issued warnings!
FDC is taking regulatory action against individuals illegally subletting flats issued under the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme, including fining one individual and issuing warnings to three others in May. While two additional cases are currently under investigation, the authorities continue to face public criticism for their inability to curb the unauthorized rental of social housing units, which remains strictly prohibited under existing regulations.

The Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has announced that it has fined one individual and issued warnings to three others regarding issues related to the subletting of flats developed under the "Gedhoruveriya" housing scheme.
FDC stated on Thursday that it has observed instances where some of the 4,000 housing units developed under the "Gedhoruveriya" scheme are being sublet. The corporation noted that it investigates such matters as soon as they are brought to its attention and takes necessary action against those found to be renting out the flats.
FDC has reiterated that subletting social housing units is strictly prohibited. The corporation revealed that in May, one individual was fined for unauthorized subletting, while three others were issued formal warnings. The corporation further noted that two additional cases of a similar nature are currently under investigation.
Amid growing concerns over the subletting of Fahi Dhiriulhun flats, a significant case emerged last February involving a unit converted into a labor quarter for expatriates. Following an investigation into the matter, the flat owner was fined MVR 50,000, and the expatriate tenants were evicted from the premises.
Despite such measures, flats are being openly sublet. The issue is particularly prevalent in the Hiyaa flats managed by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). As HDC has yet to find a solution to this problem, both HDC and the FDC have faced public criticism, with many claiming that the authorities are unable to stop the practice.
