Former Member of Parliament Mohamed Ameeth has stated that no government has ever emerged victorious after declaring war on the media, adding that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu must recognize this reality.
Ameeth made these remarks while speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program.
Ameeth stated that the Maldives is currently witnessing a trend where courts are stepping in to regulate the media. He made these remarks in reference to the events surrounding a Criminal Court order issued to the "entire country," which prohibited any direct or indirect discussion regarding the recent documentary produced by Adhadhu. Ameeth further asserted that issuing a gag order applicable to the entire nation is an untenable action that cannot be justified.
"The identity of those subject to such an order must be clearly specified. A blanket order cannot be issued against everyone," he said.
Furthermore, Ameeth criticized the recent imprisonment of two journalists. He stated that the jail sentences and fines imposed on the two *Adhadhu* journalists represent an attempt to incarcerate everyone who stands up for press freedom. He further noted that this was a move intended to intimidate journalists and discourage them from asking questions. Ameeth also emphasized that no progress can be achieved by shackling the press and silencing the public.
"When there is a desire to dismantle the pillars of democracy, the media is the first target of attack. This is exactly what we are witnessing right now," Ameeth said.
Ameeth criticized the current administration, noting that freedom of expression has been completely stifled since it took office.
