Finance Minister Zameer resigned over debt crisis: Nasheed
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has sharply criticized the government, asserting that Finance Minister Moosa Zameer resigned due to an inability to manage the nation's debt. Nasheed claimed the current administration has fallen into a debt trap by taking on additional loans and insisted that only the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) possesses the expertise to resolve the crisis and safeguard the economy. He further emphasized the necessity of a strong MDP to bolster household incomes across the Maldives.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that Finance Minister Moosa Zameer resigned from his post due to the country's debt crisis.
Speaking at the "Bodu Badhalu" campaign rally held in GDh. Hoandedhdhoo on Monday, Nasheed reacted to news of Finance Minister Zameer’s resignation immediately after concluding his address, stating that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration is collapsing.
Nasheed stated that Moosa Zameer resigned from his position as Finance Minister due to the country's debt crisis. He further asserted that neither the current administration nor Zameer possess the expertise required to manage the national debt.
Furthermore, during a meeting with the residents of GDh. Madaveli and Hoandedhdhoo, Nasheed stated that the MDP is the institution responsible for transforming the entire Maldives, noting that the party has historically been the catalyst for the country's progress. He further asserted that the MDP remains the only party capable of transforming the nation in the future to ensure increased household income for Maldivian families.
Nasheed stated that the Maldives currently stands at a four-way crossroads, and it is the citizens who will choose the path forward.
My point is that we cannot truly achieve national security without first increasing the household income of Maldivian families. The Maldives currently stands at a critical crossroads. We have the choice to head toward ruin or steer toward a safe harbor. Looking at the global landscape, we see many nations choosing the path of destruction. We must not allow that to happen to the Maldives. To prevent this and to transform the Maldives into a nation where citizens enjoy prosperous and happy lives, we must all work together. In particular, it is essential for the MDP to remain strong.Former President Mohamed Nasheed
While Nasheed spoke in this manner, he has previously expressed concern regarding the issue of the Maldives' national debt.
Nasheed stated that while the Maldives must settle its substantial outstanding debt, these repayments should be managed without impoverishing the public. He further asserted that the current administration has fallen into a debt trap by taking on additional loans to service existing ones, claiming that President Muizzu’s government is incapable of resolving the crisis.
