Immediate international action required to protect oceans: Muizzu

In his message marking World Oceans Day, the President emphasized that the health of the oceans is directly linked to the Maldives' economic stability and food security. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to promoting sustainable fishing practices and coral reef restoration to combat significant environmental challenges, such as rising ocean temperatures and coastal erosion. Furthermore, the President called for urgent international cooperation and collective action to protect marine biodiversity for the benefit of future generations.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that urgent international action is required to protect the oceans, as coastal erosion continues to escalate at an alarming rate.

In a social media post shared on Monday to mark World Oceans Day, the President emphasized that maintaining the health of our oceans is essential for the future of the planet.

Highlighting the profound connection between the people and the ocean as an integral part of their daily lives, President Muizzu stated that the protection of the seas is directly linked to the nation's economic stability, food security, and environmental sustainability.

President Muizzu stated that efforts to protect the oceans are underway, focusing on sustainable fishing practices, strengthening marine research, monitoring reef health, and implementing coral restoration and rehabilitation programs. He further emphasized that these initiatives are being carried out with a clear vision for the future.

Furthermore, President Muizzu stated that efforts are underway to implement evidence-based measures aimed at enhancing climate resilience and protecting marine biodiversity for the benefit of both the people and the environment.

President Muizzu stated that the challenges of rising ocean temperatures, coral bleaching, and increasing coastal erosion are escalating. He emphasized that international cooperation is vital at this juncture to protect the oceans, noting the urgent need for swift action. Furthermore, the President highlighted the necessity of safeguarding the oceans as a fundamental pillar of life.
