President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that previous administrations failed to adopt a holistic approach toward protecting the Maldives' environment.
The President's Office on Friday launched a new podcast series titled "The Pulse," aimed at addressing key issues that resonate with the heart of the community.
In the podcast, President Muizzu announced that his administration aims to establish modern waste management centers in every island and complete coastal protection projects across the country within the next five years. The President further stated that as part of environmental conservation efforts, the government will work towards successfully completing a major national reforestation project and achieving the target of generating 33 percent of the country's energy from renewable sources.
Emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to environmental protection, President Muizzu stated that while the current administration is committed to this strategy, previous governments had failed to do so. He further pledged that within the next two years, modern waste management centers will be established across all inhabited islands in the Maldives, alongside the implementation of comprehensive coastal protection measures.
When I speak about environmental protection, I am referring to this government’s commitment to a practical, results-oriented, and holistic approach. Previously, this level of focus was lacking. Environmental conservation efforts were often sidelined or treated as secondary to development projects. Because a comprehensive strategy was not in place, the desired outcomes were never achieved. However, God willing, we will reach our targets within this year and the next two years. Whether it is waste management or coastal protection, we will successfully complete all these projects.President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu
Referring to land reclamation projects, President Muizzu stated that land reclamation is essential for the implementation of development initiatives. However, he emphasized that these efforts are being carried out in a manner that ensures environmental protection.
In this regard, the President stated that coral propagation programs are being conducted alongside the reclamation of Rasmalé. He further noted that the project is being implemented in a manner that ensures development and environmental conservation are seamlessly integrated.
Despite President Muizzu's remarks, concerns have emerged regarding land reclamation projects proceeding in violation of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports, as well as the large-scale felling of trees. Furthermore, under the current administration, numerous mature trees lining the main thoroughfares of Hulhumalé have been cut down.
Furthermore, residents have expressed concern over the suspension of government projects aimed at coastal protection and the development of modern waste management centers across various islands.
