The Member of Parliament for the Maradhoo constituency, Ahmed Didi, has stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) requires a skilled pilot to lead its operations, rather than the engineer who built the aircraft.
He made these remarks during an interview with RaajjeMV while traveling to the atolls to campaign for Member of Parliament Meekail Naseem, who is contesting the MDP chairperson election. The most intense competition in the MDP chairperson race is currently observed between former President Mohamed Nasheed and Meekail Naseem.
Didi stated that among the candidates, Meekail is the individual most capable of driving the party forward. While Didi characterized President Nasheed as the "engineer" of the vessel, he emphasized that what the MDP currently requires is a skilled "pilot" to navigate the course with its members, identifying Meekail as that person. Didi further noted that now is the time to provide leadership opportunities to a new generation.
"Rather than taking the person who built the aircraft or the engineer who worked on it and putting them in the cockpit, the focus should be on finding a skilled pilot," Didi said.
Didi further stated that during visits to the atolls, it has become abundantly clear that the general membership overwhelmingly supports Meekail. However, he noted that certain individuals are attempting to portray a different narrative to the public. He added that the youth are calling for modern reforms and increased participation in shaping the future of the party.
